At Channel Factory, we primarily work with brands and agencies that recognize the value of maximizing their presence on YouTube. For the past few years, search engine results have started to include all kinds of content – images, maps, business listings, tweets, Facebook page posts, and most importantly, YouTube Video Links. Today, a search term that includes video of, youtube, or anything related to video will automatically include direct links to YouTube videos.
Let these mind blowing statistics start to sink in: Over 1 billion unique users visit Youtube each month. 500 years of Youtube videos are watched every day on Facebook. Youtube reaches more adults ages 18-34 than any cable network. Over 6 billion hours of video are watched on Youtube every month.
If that hasn’t convinced you of the power of Youtube for SEO…well, good luck. The cool thing about Youtube is that as long as you have an Internet connection and access to video-making equipment, you have all you need to create a channel that will bolster your business’ SEO. Here’s a brief primer of how to kick off your path toward Youtube celeb status the right way.
STEP 1: CHOOSE YOUR TOPICS
Maybe you’re thinking, “Who would want to watch a long boring video about what the products that I sell?” The answer is probably quite a good number of people, but the key is to not make a long, boring “commercial” about your products. Instead, focus on making your videos especially entertaining or informative by showcasing how your products are used, or what special features they have, or how people can choose the right ones for their needs.
Concrete example: say you sell wine and you happen to have an connoisseur-level knowledge treasure trove of different types of wine. Then instead of making a stuffy, boring video that just features different angles of the wine bottle, record yourself opening, tasting and critiquing various wine products. Or record videos of yourself eating wine paired with food and explaining what types of wines go best with what types of steaks/lobster/foie gras, if fine dining is your thing as well. Extreme win win.
You get the point. Make it fun, viewers will come.
STEP 2: RECORD YOUR VIDEOS
No need to hire Vince Gilligan to produce your videos. In most cases a high-quality consumer-level video camera will suffice. Before recording the video, make a bullet list of the main points you’ll talk about and keep the edited recording just several minutes long. Filler material is bad.
Very important: plus your business or website at the beginning AND end of the video. Include an easily clickable, enticing link to your website from the Youtube video. Also it never hurts to put a link in the description box as well.
STEP 3: OPTIMIZE FOR VSEO
Use a keyword-containing phrase in your title twice, once at the beginning and once at the end, like so: “Wine Pairings - How to choose delicious fine dining wine pairings”. Next, the description. In addition to the link to your website, write a concise paragraph focused around your key phrase. This paragraph will be shown in the search results on Google and is used to determine what phrases the video should show for.
Final step – tags. Repeat not only the key phrase itself but also popular variants of it, Enclose phrases with more than one word with double quotes. Again invoking our wine example: wine-pairings, “wine pairings”, “wine food pairings”, “wine and food”, “wine food matching”, “wine food meal”, “great wine food ideas”. The more the better, but keep the tags relevant.
STEP 4: BUILD A VIEWER BASE
There are a couple ways to “seed” your videos, aside from posting links on Facebook and Twitter.
Post your videos as a “reply” to popular related videos. This gives context about your videos’ content and launches a flow of traffic. Simply search Youtube for the exact phrase you want to rank for and post your video as a “video reply” to the top videos.
Also, build links back to your videos. Find out who is linking back to the most popular videos in your category, search for that URL in Google to see where it appears, then reach out to those sites asking them to link to your videos as well.
Soon enough your video will have several hundred views and will start to appear on Google for your key phrase!
